- A & S Display
There will be an A&S display at Æthelmearc Kingdom Twelfth Night. Within our local shire, we like to promote the arts and sciences through activities that keep us actively creating and learning. One of our favorite competitions is the pentathlon at Ice Dragon. Towards this end, the theme of the display for Æthelmearc Twelfth Night is ‘works in progress’. We want to see what people are working on right now, as well as give an opportunity for entrants to receive feedback.
If you’re working on the A&S 50, we would like to know what you’ve done, see what you’re working on right now, and what you plan to do next. If you’re working on the Ice Dragon pent, this is the place to display your progress thus far because we love the pent. For those wishing to receive feedback on their entries, we will have comment forms for that.
Documentation will be in the simplest format possible, and we will have documentation forms for you to fill out.
Documentation will include:
- What is your SCA name? (Ylaire Sainte Claire)
- What is your project? (50 illuminated invitations for the A&S 50)
- What style is your project? (based on the book of kells)
- What medium did you use for project? (gouache on water colour paper)
- Is there anything you would like feedback on? (being that these are the first 50 illuminations I have done all my own, I would like comments only on the periodness of my colour choices)
- Bardic Competition
From the Autocrat – The idea for this competition was born Ice Dragon this year. While I was in troll line, the gentle behind me and I started to talk a bit. He introduced himself, told a few jokes, and pulled a ball from my ear. It was highly amusing and helped to pass the time. While I do not remember his name (his persona and name were Jewish), I still remember the experience – how often is it that the troll-line is a great part of an event? So what did I learn at ice dragon? Not all bardic must/can be done in front of a large crowd, small intimate groups can make for wonderful bardic performances – but how to hold a competition to judge that sort of thing?
During the day we will be having a bardic competition. The competition will begin at 9am and end at 4pm. The judging will be by populace vote. Everyone who attends twelfth night will be given coins at the door. Throughout the day, bards will be need to perform for as many or as few people as they like, as many or as few times as they like. The populace will pay the bard for his/her/their services with the coins. At 4pm the coins will be counted and the winner will be announced in court and presented with something. Every bard will need a hat, tambourine, sack, hood, basket, bowl, cup, etc for the coins to be put into. Feel free to get up on a table and tell a story for everybody to hear, or tell the same three jokes 200 times until you’ve told them to every person at the event.
Rules for the Bardic competition:
1. No strippers or flashers – having a nice pair of anything isn’t bardic.
2. No fire of any kind. This includes: twirling, spinning, juggling, eating, breathing, or the lighting oneself
3. No knife juggling or anything dangerous with a knife
4. Nothing that endangers the populace – paperwork makes for a sad autocrat
